Onam

Onam is a major harvest festival celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm in the Indian state of Kerala. It marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden era of peace, prosperity, and equality. The festival also honors Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar, who is believed to have sent Mahabali to the netherworld.

Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September), Onam lasts for 10 days, with the most important day being Thiruvonam. People decorate their homes with floral rangolis called Pookalam, wear traditional attire, and begin the day with special pujas. Devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, light lamps, and place idols of Thrikkakara Appan as part of the rituals.

The highlight of Onam is the grand feast known as Onasadya, a vegetarian meal served on a banana leaf that includes a variety of traditional Kerala dishes. Cultural performances such as Thiruvathira dance, Pulikali (tiger dance), and Vallam Kali (boat races) add color and excitement to the celebration.

Onam is not just a festival—it’s a celebration of unity, tradition, and gratitude for nature’s abundance. It brings families and communities together, regardless of caste or religion, to cherish the values of love, harmony, and righteousness.
