Mundan pooja, also known as Chudakarana, is a Hindu ritual where a baby’s first hair is shaved off, typically between one and three years of age. This ceremony is believed to purify the child, removing negative influences from past lives, and is performed to ensure a healthy, prosperous, and spiritually blessed future. The ritual involves a priest who conducts prayers, and a barber who shaves a portion of the child’s hair, often leaving a lock called a “shikha”.
Mundan Pooja carries deep spiritual and cultural importance:
A typical Mundan ceremony includes:
Invocation of Lord Ganesha for blessings and removal of obstacles.
The family takes a vow and prays for the child’s well-being.
Fire ritual performed to invoke divine deities and purify the environment.
The priest performs the first cut, followed by a barber trimming the remaining hair.
The hair is offered as a symbolic gesture of surrender to the divine.
The child receives blessings from elders and the priest.
